The Membership Officer plays a vital role in supporting engagement, onboarding, and retention at the local level.
Getting Started
Core Responsibilities
Welcoming New Members
Ensure new members are contacted in a timely, welcoming, and personal way.
- Reach out to new, reinstated, and transferred members
- Help new members feel comfortable and informed
- Connect members to local opportunities and resources
Member Engagement
Support ongoing connection in ways that work for different members.
- Share opportunities to connect (events, content, community)
- Encourage participation without pressure
- Recognize that engagement looks different for each member
Renewal and Retention
Support continued membership through thoughtful outreach and communication.
- Send renewal reminders (if not handled by LocSec)
- Reach out to lapsed members when appropriate
- Help members understand the value of staying connected
How the Work Gets Done
Member Communication
Use clear, consistent, and welcoming communication.
- Respond to member questions and outreach
- Provide helpful, timely information
- Contribute to newsletters and announcements
Events and Activities
Support member engagement through events (in collaboration with other roles).
- Promote events to members
- Help ensure events are welcoming to new attendees
- Support new member or introductory events
Supporting Remote Members
Ensure members who cannot attend in person still feel included and valued.
- Maintain consistent communication
- Provide ways to engage beyond events
- Help connect members in similar geographic areas
Supporting Structures
Area Coordinators
Area Coordinators extend local connection and outreach.
- Serve as additional welcomers in their area
- Host occasional local events
- Help connect nearby members
Collaboration with Other Roles
Work with other volunteers to support membership goals.
- Local Secretary and ExComm
- Testing Coordinator
- Editor / Communications roles
- National Office and National Membership Officer
Collaboration helps ensure members have a consistent and positive experience.

Local Group Flexibility: Every Local Group organizes volunteer roles a little differently. These responsibilities may belong to the Local Group Membership Officer or be shared among multiple volunteers.
